Pope Francis today led a mass to ordain 19 priests at the Vatican, insisting that they must not become vain like a ‘peacock’.

The 78-year-old pontiff told the men at St Peter’s Basilica that their homilies should be ‘from the heart’ and they should avoid being ‘boring’.

Francis said the priests should ensure they always forgive rather than condemn, and described them as ‘ministers of unity in the Church’.

He told them to live for God’s pleasure rather than their own, warning that not doing this would see them ‘act like a peacock’ and be ‘ugly’.

Francis also said the new priests should ‘never refuse Baptism to whoever asks for it’, reported the Catholic News Agency.

Most of the men ordained were part of Roman seminaries, including the Pontifical Roman and Madonna del Divino Amore institutions.

Also today, Pope Francis led prayers in St Peter’s Square for the dead and displaced from the earthquake in Nepal and surrounding areas.

He called for assistance for the survivors during a blessing, adding that he was praying for the victims and ‘all those who are suffering’.
